Authorities say there were no smoke detectors in the Council Bluffs home that caught fire early this morning and killed a man. Assistant Fire Chief Matt Thomas says crews were called to the home about one A.M. and immediately went to work.

Thomas says, “The fire was brought under control real quick and it was confined to the kitchen.” He says firefighters conducted a search of the house once the flames were out and they made a discovery near a bathroom.

“They did find a victim who was transported by ambulance to Mercy Hospital,” he says. The man was pronounced dead at the hospital. He’s believed to have been in his 40s.

A dog also died in fire. The cause of the fire is under investigation.
