Newton police are investigating a shooting last night at an apartment that left one man in the hospital. Newton police chief, Jeff Hoebelheinrich, says 49-year-old Kelly Edward Peterson was shot with a handgun during an altercation with 47-year-old Murray Jon Pender.

Peterson was flown from the Newton hospital to Mercy Medical Center in Des Moines. Hoebelheinrich says Peterson’s injuries are serious, but not life-threatening. Peterson is listed in stable condition. Pender was treated and released for injuries that Hoeberheinrich says were not gun related.

Hoebelhinrich says the are still investigating what happened, and not charges have been filed. Hoebelhienrich says they are looking to talk with several people the men were in contact with throughout the day and want to go slowly to be sure they make the correct decision if, and when they do file charges.

Hoebelheinrich says they went to the scene after they got a 9-1-1 call from someone outside the apartment that said they heard a gunshot.
