At least 14 people were taken to area hospitals after the rollover of a bus this morning in Pottawattamie County.

The accident happened on Interstate 80 eastbound, at mile marker 30, about a mile east of the Minden exit.

The leased bus, carrying approximately 40 people, mostly persons in their late teens and early 20s, landed on its side at around 7:45 AM. Its passengers were part of an on-tour drum and bugle corps.

The first emergency crews on the scene reported there were anywhere from 28-to 33 “walking wounded,” but there have been no reports of fatalies.

Pottawattamie County Sheriff Jeff Danker said it appears the bus blew a tire before rolling into the south ditch onto its side.

The passengers, most of whom suffered non-life threatening injuries, escaped through hatches in the bus’ roof.

At least one of the crash victims was flown by one of two helicopters which landed at the scene, to an area hospital.

Crews from no fewer than seven area fire and rescue departments along with various ambulance services responded to the crash, which caused eastbound I-80 to be shut down for a little more than two-hours.

The accident remains under investigation by the Iowa State Patrol.
