Crop report shows corn and beans off to good start

June 13, 2011 By Dar Danielson

The weekly crop report shows things are off to a good start. Nearly all the state’s corn crop has been planted and already emerged from the ground, and the U.S.D.A. report says only two percent of the crop is reported in very poor or poor condition.

Only two percent of the soybeans remain to be planted and 92% of the beans already have emerged, which is above the five year average of 88% and slightly above last year’s 91%. Eighty-two percent of the beans are reported in good or excellent condition, with none reported in very poor condition and just two percent reported in poor condition.

Heavy rainfall has caused ponding in some areas, and raised the concern for farmers, but the report says the scattered hail received last week appears to have done little damage to the crops.
