The state auditor says the former business manager of a north-central Iowa school district misused money to pay off her credit card balances. State Auditor David Vaudt says that a special investigation identified $262,000 in improper spending tied to former Lake Mills Community School District employee Chris Mathahs.

Vaudt says most of the spending involved checks issued from the district’s bank account to credit card companies where she had personal accounts. He says there were some instances of Mathahs making overpayments to those accounts and then receiving refund checks. The investigation also found that Mathahs misused funds to travel to a conference in Florida where she gave a presentation about how small school districts can reduce their potential risk of fraud.

Mathahs resigned from the school district in December.
