A boy who nearly drowned in a central Iowa swimming pool is hospitalized in critical condition today. Rescue workers were called to the Valley View Aquatics Center in West Des Moines at 4:15 p.m. Tuesday.

A swimmer told police he bumped into the boy who was floating face down in the water. He flipped the child over and saw his face was purple.

Pool staff pulled him out of the water and started CPR. The boy was later identified as 5-year-old Kaden Daniels of Des Moines. He was taken to Blank Children’s Hospital, where he’s listed in critical condition.

The pool remains closed today.
