The Salvation Army is asking for fan donations or donations of cash to purchase fans for needy Iowans without air conditioning. Susan Eustice, with the Salvation Army in Council Bluffs, says as the temperature rises – so does their demand for fans.

Since the fan program began in June, the Council Bluff chapter of the Salvation Army has distributed about 150 fans. Eustice says the fans are available free of charge for anyone over 50, disabled individuals or those with a medical condition.

“They really can be life savers for people without air conditioning. The Salvation Army is really worried about those most vulnerable,” Eustice said. Right now, the demand for fans is outweighing the supply.

“As soon as fans get donated, they are turning around and going out with clients who need them,” Eustice said. The fan program in Council Bluffs runs through September 2nd. Salvation Army chapters around the state have also opened “cooling stations” for those seeking shelter from the heat.
