Chicago boy drowns in Nodaway River

July 20, 2011 By Dar Danielson

An 11-year-old from Chicago drowned Tuesday while swimming in the Nodaway River at Clarinda. The Iowa D.N.R. says the boy was pulled into the undertow of a low-head dam and a 16-year-old girl was also pulled under as she tried to save him.

Bystanders were able to pull the girl from the water and she was taken to an Omaha hospital. Her condition is not available. The boy’s body was recovered from the water. The names of the two have not been released.
