Cooler air expected to move in and give some heat relief

July 21, 2011 By Radio Iowa Contributor

After five days of sweltering heat statewide, a slight cool-off is finally coming. The Excessive Heat Warning that’s been in place across Iowa since Sunday will expire later this morning. Meteorologist Roger Vachalek, at the National Weather Service, says it’s a welcome change.

Temps are still warm this morning, but cooler air will move down from Minnesota by mid-morning in addition to thunderstorms to our west which will crawl over Iowa, keeping the temperatures down, at least compared to yesterday. Vachalek says it’ll still be steamy today, with highs in the 80s and low 90s.

Lows tonight will dip into the 60s but tomorrow’s highs will be back up in the mid-to-upper 80s with heat indices again rising to near 100-degrees. Learn more about the forecast at weather-dot-gov.
