Former principal requests more time to consider plea deal in porn case

August 2, 2011 By Matt Kelley

A former Iowa elementary school principal, charged in a child pornography case, is due back in a federal court today. Robert Burke, 43, was arrested in June at his home in Dubuque.

Investigators said they traced images of child pornography to his home computer. Burke was quickly fired as principal at Sageville Elementary School, where he’d been since 2004. Federal prosecutors said Burke admitted during an interview that he hid a camera in the boy’s bathroom of the school in Dubuque.

Burke, who pleaded not guilty to seven child pornography charges last month, was expected to plead guilty on Monday to one count of producing child pornography under a plea deal with prosecutors. Instead, the hearing was delayed until today as Burke asked for more time to consult with his attorney.
