Cargill expands recall of ground turkey after salmonella outbreak

August 4, 2011 By Matt Kelley

Food-producing giant Cargill is widening the recall of its ground turkey after illnesses in Iowa and more than two-dozen other states.

The Minnesota-based Cargill is recalling 36-million pounds of fresh and frozen ground turkey after what health officials are now calling a nationwide outbreak of salmonella.

One person in California died and at least 76 others got sick in 26 states, including one case in Iowa. The illnesses are reported back as far as March and are tied to a meat-processing plant in Springdale, Arkansas. Turkey production at the plant is suspended until the source of the outbreak is found.
