A soldier from northern Iowa is among the 30 American troops killed late Friday when their helicopter was shot down in Afghanistan.
Thirty-five-year-old Jon Tumilson of Rockford was killed late Friday when a helicopter was shot down in Afghanistan. A U.S. Navy spokesperson confirmed the death on Saturday.
Tumilson was a 1995 graduate of Rockford High School and was among 29 other troops, most of them from the elite Navy SEALS unit that killed al-Quaida leader Osama bin Laden.
It was the deadliest single incident for American forces since the Afgan war began.
