Davenport sex offender arrested in Cookie Monster costume

August 9, 2011 By Radio Iowa Contributor

For a while he was the Cookie Monster. Now he’s just a registered sex offender in jail. Twenty-five-year-old James Lester Rogers of Davenport wore a Cookie Monster costume for a company called Q.C. Characters, handed out fliers to children and posed for pictures with them at the Mississippi Valley Fair in Davenport on Saturday.

But he was arrested after approaching a cop and saying hello. The officer, a member of the Scott County Sex Offender Task Force, thought he recognized Rogers’ voice and asked him who he was.

Rogers then took off the head of his costume and identified himself. Rogers, who was convicted in Linn County for lascivious acts with a minor in 2005, is allowed to attend the fair but not to work or volunteer there in any capacity. If he’s found guilty of the charge, he could face up to two years in prison.
