Volunteers will be cleaning up a long stretch of a central Iowa river this morning as they float along in canoes. John Laird, with the Hamilton County Conservation Department, says they’ll be focusing on a five-mile section of the Boone River with today’s effort, as plans got washed out a year ago.

River levels were too high and it was raining heavily last year, so the event had to be canceled. Laird says the river clean-up project has netted some diverse items before.

Washers and driers, car tires, cans and bottles, scrap metal and all sorts of junk. Laird said if you plan to participate in the clean up project, expect about a four-hour shift.

Laird said the clean up will focus on the river near Stratford up to a point south of Webster City. Volunteers are asked to meet at 7 A.M. at the Bell’s Mill Park shelter.

The first 50 people will get a free T-shirt and there’s a free lunch after the clean-up effort is over.
