Strong storms moved across northern Iowa overnight, causing considerable tree damage and knocking out the lights. Chuck A wind gust of 68 miles-an-hour was reported at the Algona Municpal Airport, another gust of 75 miles-an-hour was reported at rural Whittemore.

There were also reports of downed power lines in Algona, McGregor road was blocked for a while, crews from the Algona Public Works Department and Algona Muncipal Utilities were out in response to the aftermath of the storm. Rod Donovan, a meteorologist at the National Weather Service, says there were numerous reports of damage.

Donovan says there’s damage from strong winds to grain bins, trees and power lines in areas around Algona, Sanborn, Sheldon and Emmetsburg. Power was reported to be out in the Wesley area along with lots of tree damage in that area. Plants at the Hy-Vee grocery store were scattered by the strong winds, while the rain gauge in Algona reads 1.13 inches from the fast-moving storm.
