A north-central Iowa jury says the driver of a pickup should bear only 20% of the blame for the death of a Mason City bicyclist three years ago. Richard Lind was fatally injured in a late-night July 2008 collision with a pickup truck driven by Mark Hulsing Junior.

Lind’s widow Dawn sued Hulsing and the truck’s owner Vernon Hulsing, saying that Mark Hulsing turned left in front of Lind without any warning. The jury in its ruling assigned Mark Hulsing only 20-percent of the fault, attributing the rest to the victim, who police say did not have lights on his bicycle and was wearing dark clothing at the time of the accident.

No damages were awarded to Dawn Lind, who was ordered to pay $768 in court costs.
