Firefighter struck, killed in I-80 accident zone Sunday night

September 19, 2011 By O. Kay Henderson

A western Iowa firefighter who was directing traffic around a two-vehicle accident on Interstate-80 was struck and killed by another motorist Sunday night.

According to the Iowa State Patrol’s accident report, a 43-year-old man from Ames was going east when he entered an accident zone near the Shelby exit on Interstate 80. That’s about 30 miles east of Council Bluffs. The man wound up driving into the lane closed because of the accident and, at about 10 ’til seven last night, his car hit a 41-year-old fire fighter who was directing traffic.

The firefighter, Michael Collins from nearby Minden, died at the scene. David Thies of Ames was driving the car that hit the firefighter.
