A grand jury has cleared three Iowa law enforcement officers of any wrongdoing in the shooting death of a Wisconsin man this summer. The shooting took place on the afternoon of June 22 in rural Floyd County.
It happened following a chase of a suspected stolen vehicle. The suspect, 30-year-old John Pekrun of Wauwatosa, Wisconsin, was also wanted in Wisconsin for a probation violation. The chase, which stretched into Minnesota for a time, ended four miles east of Floyd when Pekrun lost control of the vehicle he was driving.
Officer said Pekrun came out of the vehicle armed with a hunting style knife and was confronted by Iowa State Troopers Tyrel Williamson and Mark Ades, as well as Floyd County Deputy Chris Myers. Pekrun refused to drop the knife despite repeated commands from the officers. Deputy Myers discharged a taser, but Pekrun continued to resist and refused to drop the knife.
Trooper Williamson then shot and killed Pekrun. On Tuesday, a Grand Jury in Floyd County completed its review of the case and concluded the officer’s actions were warranted and no charges will be filed.
