The chairwoman of the Iowa Democratic Party is criticizing Republican Congressman Steve King for being the only member of the Iowa delegation to vote against a budget resolution that included funding for disaster aid. King answered the criticism in a video release, saying he voted no to stick with his word to hold the line on spending, just as he had on a similar vote in September.

King says if congress passes a budget and says it will stick to a budget ceiling then they have to stick to that and get spending under control. He say “If I go along with this spending than never again in the rest of this congress can I take a stand on other spending,” King said.

King says the disaster money was a small part of the budget bill. He says he is glad to see money going to disaster aid, but says that money is only one-quarter of one percent of the money in the bill. King says the disaster spending is not what the bill is about, he says it’s about “overspending it’s about irresponsible spending.”

Democrat party chair Sue Dvorsky also criticized King for his comment during a congressional hearing that people who are unemployed should not be allowed to vote. King said it used to be that property owners were the only ones allowed to vote because they “had some skin in the game” when it came to making policy decisions.
