New Census information shows Iowa is among the top states when it comes to home ownership. The data shows West Virginia and Minnesota had the highest home ownership rates at 73.4% and 73%, while Iowa, Michigan and Delaware each had a home ownership rates of 72.1%.
That ownership rate was down slightly for Iowa from the 72.3% in 2000. The data showed that the number of homes in the state increase just over eight percent from 2000 to 2010 (8.4%). While the numbers of homes increased, the number that were vacant homes also went up, with the vacancy rate climbing to 8.6% in 2010 compared to 6.8% in 2000.
The national home ownership rate fell just about one percent in the decade, while the number of vacant homes increased nationally by over two percent.
