A child who reportedly fell into the Winnebago River in Forest City on Sunday afternoon is being presumed safe after a four-hour search by rescue workers. The city’s fire chief says they were called by an adult who said he saw a child, between 7 and 10 years old, fall into the river.

The adult left to get help and said he didn’t have a cell phone. Local and D.N.R. officials searched at first and they were later joined by a scuba team. No sign of the boy was found.

Officials believed the boy must have gotten out of the water himself, gone home and not told anyone what had happened.
