Iowa native killed on duty with the Marines in Afghanistan

November 22, 2011 By Matt Kelley

A U.S. Marine from eastern Iowa has died from injuries he received on duty in Afghanistan. Zach Reiff was on his second tour of duty in Afghanistan.

The 2007 graduate of Preston High School had returned to Iowa in September and spoke to several classes at the school where his mother works. Preston High School Principal Dave Miller did not want to take part in a recorded interview, but confirmed Reiff died Monday night at a hospital in Germany.

He was injured on Friday by an improvised explosive device. Miller said Reiff was a hard-working student who seemed to enjoy being in the service.

In high school, Reiff was active in football, wrestling and track. His parents, Marsha and Matt, flew to Germany on Saturday.
