Alden man dies in accident

December 5, 2011 By Radio Iowa Contributor

The Iowa State Patrol says a two-car accident on Sunday morning near Blairsburg killed a 47-year-old Alden man.

The victim is identified as Joe Edward Bailey. Bailey was a passenger in a 2005 Chevrolet Cobalt driven by 58-year-old Harold Dean Newton also of Alden. Reportedly, the Newton car was traveling westbound on D-25 when it lost control and slid sideways into the path of an eastbound 2005 Dodge Stratus driven by 36-year-old Shannon K. McQueen of Woolstock.

The McQueen car struck the passenger door of the Newton auto. The Newton car then landed in the south ditch with the McQueen car coming to rest in the eastbound lane. Road conditions at the time were described as icy. Bailey was pronounced dead at the accident scene. Both drivers were injured in the accident.

Newton was transported by air ambulance to Iowa Methodist Medical Center in Des Moines where he is in fair condition. There was no report on McQueen’s condition. The accident remains under investigation.
