Authorities are looking for a man who fired a shotgun while trying to break into a rural eastern Iowa home this morning. Jackson County Sheriff’s deputies were sent to a home outside of Monmouth just before one a.m. on the report of an attempted burglary.

The home owner, Mike Franzen, said his wife woke him up after hearing noises outside the home. Franzen opened a garage door and found a man wearing a black ski mask and armed with a shotgun.

The suspect fired once, hitting the garage door but missing Franzen, before fleeing the scene. In addition to the ski mask, the burglar was wearing a green coat and blue jeans. Anyone with information about the case is asked to call the Jackson County Sheriff’s office at 563-652-3312.
