An Iowa City police officer shot a man with a handgun after other officers fired bean bags and a taser at the man and he did not put down the gun. Police say 21-year-old Chad Newmire was taken to the hospital with non-lifethreatening injuries.

Police had been called to the house around six a.m. Sunday by someone who said they had received a despondent text message from Newmire. Officers says they found Newmire in front of the house with a handgun stuck in the waist of his pants.

They negotiated with Newmire for about 40 minutes and say he then made movements toward the gun. Officer Alirio Arcenas, a two year veteran of the department, shot Newmire and has been put on standard administrative leave while the Iowa D.C.I. investigates the shooting.
