Cyclones, Hawkeyes focus on classwork this week

December 12, 2011 By Todd Kimm

Iowa State and Iowa will focus on final exams before resuming the season next weekend. The Cyclones are 7-3 after an 86-76 win over the Hawkeyes last Friday night. Coach Fred Hoiberg’s team returns to action next Sunday at home against Central Michigan.

Hoiberg says they have nine days off and he has stressed to them the need to finish off their classes strong as he says you are called a “student athlete” for a reason. The Hawkeyes are 5-5 and return to action at home on Saturday against Drake.

Coach Fran McCaffery says they will also use the time off to get healthy. He says they need some time as they have a lot of guys who are “banged up” and will need to be in the training room.

One bright spot for the Hawkeyes last week was the play of Roy Devyn Marble. The Sophomore averaged more than 17 points in two games, including a career high 21 in the loss at Iowa State.

“He got knocked to the floor about five times, just gets up and make his free throws…I just can’t come up with enough superlatives to talk about how I feel about him right now,” McCaffrey said.

Marble spent much of the time running the point for the injured Bryce Cartwright. Drake is 6-3 on the season while U.N.I. is 9-1. The Panthers return from final exams to play Loras next Monday.
