Arrest made in “suspicious” death in Waterloo

December 16, 2011 By Radio Iowa Contributor

A Waterloo man is in custody this morning in connection with what police were calling a “suspicious death.” Twenty-one-year old Montez Tyrone Caples of Waterloo was arrested on Thursday night and has been charged with first-degree murder in the death of 34 year-old Robert John Shannon of Parkersburg.

Shannon was found slumped over the steering wheel of a running car at the intersection of Whittier and Poplar Avenues on Wednesday afternoon. His death was originally deemed “suspicious,” but autopsy results show that he died of a gunshot wound to the back of the head.

Caples is being held in the Black Hawk County Jail without bond. He’ll make his initial court appearance this morning.
