Three Mason City teens are under arrest after police say they made “MacGyver-style” bombs.

Mason City police say they were dispatched Sunday afternoon at about 4:30 to the city’s southeast side.

On arrival, they observed several plastic bottles sitting on the sidewalk that appeared to contain materials that when mixed may start fire or explode.

Personnel from the Mason City Fire Department and state fire marshal’s office were asked to respond to the scene.

Iowa State Fire Marshal’s agents determined that the bottles could be potentially dangerous and they were destroyed in place.

There was no property damage sustained during the incident.

Three juveniles, 17-year-old Jamison Diekuis, 17-year-old Daniel Shaw and 16-year-old Colin Halfpap, all of Mason City, were charged with reckless use of fire or explosives.

All three were referred to Juvenile Court Services and released to their parents.
