A new recycling campaign in the state is targeting large business meetings and conferences. Teresa Kurtz, with the Iowa Recycling Association, says conferences often involve paper registration, bottled water, cardboard lunch boxes and other waste products that quickly add up.

“Meetings and conferences and the hospitality industry are actually a huge part of the waste stream. In fact, it was listed number two among the top ten waste streams – second behind only construction and demolition waste,” Kurtz said.

The new campaign by the Iowa Recycling Association involves an online guide to help conference organizers clean up their act. “The bottom line is it ultimately will save you money,” Kurtz said. “Even the upfront cost of investing in say, durable dishware and a dishwasher. It’s ultimately going to save you money in the long run, versus providing everyone with Styrofoam and plastic cups and bottled water.”

The guide, available at www.iowarecycles.org, also includes tips on local food choices, “green” venues and smarter travel options.
