Richland farmer dies in grain bin accident

January 6, 2012 By Radio Iowa Contributor

A southeast Iowa man lost his life in a farming accident on Thursday, January 5th. Lynn Reasor, an investigator with the Keokuk County Iowa Medical Examiner’s office, confirms that 60-year-old John Hammes of Richland died while working in a grain bin on his farm.

According to Reasor, Hammes was unloading a grain bin when the vacuum grabbed him and pulled him downward, and the soybeans in the bin poured on top of him. Emergency crews unsuccessfully tried to revive him and he was pronounced dead at the scene.

The accident happened shortly before 7 A.M.
