Mason City man shot by 4-year-old son

February 28, 2012 By Radio Iowa Contributor

A Mason City man is listed in stable condition with non-life threatening injuries after his 4-year-old son accidentally shot him in the knee. Police were called around 2 p.m. Monday to a home on Mason City’s northeast side (509 4th Northeast) where they found 29-year-old Christopher Upenieks was accidentally shot by his son after the boy got the weapon and fired it.

Police say Upenieks left the handgun unsecured in his truck. Upenieks was found in his truck when officers arrived. He was transported to Mercy Medical Center-North Iowa for treatment. Upenieks had a valid permit to carry the weapon.

The Department of Human Services has been notified of the incident and charges are pending.
