Police say speed a factor in double-fatal motorcycle crash

March 19, 2012 By Matt Kelley

Authorities have released the names of the two people killed in a motorcycle crash outside a bar in Cedar Rapids late Saturday night. The male driver, who died at the scene, is identified as 27-year-old Courtney Jenkins of Cedar Rapids. A passenger, 32-year-old Christine Shroyer of North Liberty, was taken to a hospital where she later died from her injuries.

Cedar Rapids Police Sergeant Cristy Hamblin says the crash happened around 11:20 p.m. on 16th Avenue SW in front of the Red Baron Bar & Dance Club in Czech Village. “We believe speed may be a factor,” Hamblin said. “We had several witnesses who saw the motorcycle…at a high rate of speed. Once you come into Czech Village, there are speed bumps and when they hit the first speed bump, that made Mr. Jenkins lose control.” Investigators are still trying to determine how fast the motorcycle was going.

After hitting the speed bump, the motorcycle went up a curb and struck a cement flower pot. There were several witnesses to the crash as Czech Village was crowded with people. “Being St. Patrick’s Day, of course the bars were filled, so we had witnesses who thank goodness were sober and were able to give us some good information,” Hamblin said. Neither Jenkins or Shroyer were wearing helmets.
