Police in Cedar Rapids are investigating a shooting last night that landed one man in the hospital. Sergeant Cristy Hamblin says officers responded to a call shortly after 9:30 p.m. that someone had been shot in the southeast part of the city. “While they were in route, they got a second call from the victim himself saying he had been shot and he was driving himself to St. Luke’s Hospital,” Hamblin said.

The victim, 26-year-old Jerome Smallwood of Cedar Rapids, was eventually transferred to University of Iowa Hospitals in Iowa City. Smallwood was able to speak with investigators and claimed he pulled over to talk with someone in the 2000 block of 5th Avenue SE when another person pulled out a gun and shot him in the face.

Hamblin said Smallwood’s injuries are not considered life threatening. No one has been arrested in the case.
