Four of the six people who died on Iowa’s roads over the weekend were on motorcycles. In one crash in the town of Washington on Saturday afternoon, state troopers say a pickup truck crossed the center line and hit a motorcycle head-on, killing an Illinois couple.

Evelyn Mitchell, a statistical analyst for the Iowa D.O.T., says it’s unfortunate, but motorcycling deaths are quickly adding up. Mitchell says, “My figures show me, what I have in my database anyway, are 13 that we have so far this year with the four that we added today.”

She says the number of motorcyclists killed this year on Iowa’s roads is more than double the total from a year ago. “We had two motorcycle fatalities in March of last year and three in April and as of this date, in May, we didn’t have any fatalities as yet,” according to Mitchell.

In all of last year, 35 motorcyclists were killed on Iowa’s roads and very few of them were wearing helmets. “Last year, there were only two that had helmets out of that 35,” Mitchell says.

The two motorcyclists killed Saturday in Washington are identified as 57-year-old Ronald Rozema and 55-year-old Lynn Rozema, both of DeKalb, Illinois. Two other fatal motorcycle crashes were reported Saturday: 42-year-old Bradley Stephen of Monticello was killed near Bernard and 44-year-old James Mills of Northwood died in Worth County.

Two cars collided in Black Hawk County on Saturday, killing 24-year-old Greg Kollmann of Waterloo. Another fatal car crash on Sunday in Ames killed 41-year-old Terry Rehlander of Ames.
