A Des Moines man who caused a deadly crash last summer was sentenced this morning. Police said 21-year-old Michael Lomax was drunk on the night of August 28th when he drove his car at speeds near 100 miles an hour, ran a red light and struck another car driven by 17-year-old Jennifer Garcia.

She died in the crash while three others in her car and a passenger in Lomax’s vehicle were seriously hurt. Dramatic video captured from inside a police squad car showed officers and firefighters risking their lives to pull teenagers out of Garcia’s burning car that flipped on its side.

In March, a Polk County judge found Lomax guilty of homicide by vehicle while under the influence of alcohol and several other charges. Today, Lomax was sentenced to 30 years in prison.
