Cedar Rapids drowning victim identified

May 24, 2012 By Dar Danielson

The Linn County Medical Examiner has identified the body of the man pulled from the Cedar River Tuesday as 28-year-old Silverio Matais-Perez of southeast Cedar Rapids. The medical examiner is waiting on toxicology reports to determine the cause of death.

Several witnesses reported that Perez went underwater and failed to re-emerge while trying to cross the Cedar River on Saturday evening around 7:00 p.m. Firefighters searched the Cedar River for four days before finding the body Tuesday just before noon.
