A former Penn State wrestler from southwest Iowa is facing jail time, but has avoided a trial on charges of attempted rape. Andrew Long of Creston left the Penn State wrestling team last August after he was arrested by State College police.

The 23-year-old was charged with the attempted rape of a 55-year-old woman who was the mother of a Penn State student. On Monday, as his trial was set to begin, Long pleaded guilty to a charge of aggravated indecent assault.

As part of the plea deal, the Centre Daily Times of State College reports Long will face a sentence of at least 364 days in jail. Long finished third at 133 pounds in the 2011 NCAA tournament, helping lead the Nittany Lions to a national title.

Long was a three-time state wrestling champion at Creston High School. He wrestled at Iowa State for two years before transferring to Penn State.
