Fire sparks drug investigation

June 10, 2012 By Radio Iowa Contributor

Two residents of an apartment complex in the north central Iowa community of Fredericksburg have been charged with drug crimes after fire fighters went into the eight-unit building to put out a fire.

Twenty-seven-year old Phillip Hamby and 23-year-old Norma Hennings were each charged with possession of drug paraphernalia after the sheriff’s office executed a search warrant at their apartment on Thursday.

While participating in the annual Fredericksburg Dairy Days parade on Wednesday, a firefighter from Waucoma spotted smoke coming from the Southeast Avenue Apartments, located at the corner of Main Street and Southeast Avenue. Fredericksburg firefighters say the fire as accidental. They say it started on an electric stove, spread to a nearby microwave and then jumped into the attic. No injuries were reported.
