Forecasters say this will be Iowa’s hottest day of the year, so far. Meteorologist Frank Boksa, at the National Weather Service, says spring doesn’t officially end until Wednesday, but temperatures today will feel very much like mid-summer.

Boksa says, “We’re looking at record or near-record highs today in the mid to upper 90s and I would not be surprised to see a few 100-degree readings scattered about.” Heat indices today may also be in the triple-digits. He says the heat wave will continue for at least another day.

“We will be warm through Tuesday, although Tuesday, the highs don’t look quite as warm as they do for today,” Boksa says. “For Wednesday, we’ll have a cold front that will push through the area and knock temperatures back down into the 80s.”

The forecast calls for a high of 98-degrees in Des Moines today, which would tie the all-time high set in 1953.
