Forecasters say it may hit 100-degrees — or hotter — today in several cities in southwest and central Iowa, including Council Bluffs, Shenandoah, Atlantic and Des Moines. Meteorologist Craig Cogil at the National Weather Service, says it’ll be steamy.

Cogil says, “With high readings right up around a hundred degrees and when you combine that with humidity, we’re going to see heat index values of 105 to 110 this afternoon.” A heat advisory is in effect as the rest of the state will see highs in the mid to upper-90s and triple-digit heat indices.

He says that heat wave will back off slightly tomorrow. “We are going to see a front push down into the state later on tonight into Thursday which will bring slightly cooler air in with highs dropping into the lower 90s,” Cogil says. “It does look like, into next week, high temps will remain in the upper 80s and 90s through that period.”

Parts of eastern and southeastern Iowa will be under an Excessive Heat Watch from Thursday morning into Friday morning. Learn more at: www.weather.gov.
