Parent sues Mason City school over bullying

June 28, 2012 By Radio Iowa Contributor

The Mason City Community School District is being sued by a parent who claims the district did nothing to protect her teenager from bullying. Heather Conti filed the lawsuit in Cerro Gordo County District Court on behalf of her 17-year-old daughter, Angelina.

The suit says that during the 2010-and-11 school year, Angelina suffered harassment that was “detrimental to her physical and mental health and substantially interfered with her academic performance.” The lawsuit also says Angelina Conti received text messages and a phone call threatening her with violence.

The harassment continued despite the Contis filing a police report. Superintendent Anita Micich says the school district wouldn’t not directly comment about the case, but pointed out that the district has a strict anti-bullying policy and takes the issue of bullying very seriously.
