One dead in shoot out during drug investigation near Iowa City

August 17, 2012 By Matt Kelley

Two law officers were involved in a fatal shooting last night in eastern Iowa. Jessica Lown, spokesperson for the Iowa Department of Public Safety, says it happened in a trailer park near Iowa City as the officers were conducting an undercover drug investigation.

“There was an altercation that ensued, shots were fired and as a result, one person is confirmed dead and a second person was injured,” Lown said. “Fortunately, none of the officers involved were injured.”

The two state agents with the Division of Narcotics Enforcement are assigned to the Johnson County Drug Task Force. It’s unclear if the agents were fired upon. “At this point in time, we’re not prepared to release additional and specific details along those lines,” Lown said.

The Iowa Division of Criminal Investigation and the Johnson County Sheriff’s office are among the agencies investigating the incident, which happened around 7 p.m. at the Breckenridge Trailer Court. The suspect who was shot and injured is being treated at a hospital.

The names of the suspects and officers are being withheld pending notification of family and further investigation.
