Man accepts plea deal in attack on Iowa City police officer

September 21, 2012 By Matt Kelley

A former University of Iowa student who was accused of trying to kill an Iowa City police officer pleaded guilty to lesser charges today. Twenty-one-year-old Branden Plummer was charged with attempted murder last November when authorities said he punched and choked Iowa City Police Sergeant Brian Krei.

Plummer had been stopped by Krei on a complaint that he was blocking traffic at an intersection. His trial was scheduled to start next week, but Plummer pleaded guilty to lesser charges of willful injury and interference with official acts inflicting bodily injury.

As part of the plea agreement, Plummer is expected to be given a 60-day jail sentence and will likely receive credit for 30-days he’s already served.
