Former Scarville city clerk sentenced on theft charge

December 12, 2012 By Radio Iowa Contributor

A former city clerk in north-central Iowa is sentenced to jailtime after a state audit found she took money from the city. Former Scarville city clerk Jolene Carter was sentenced on Tuesday by Winnebago County District Judge DeDra Schroeder to 30 days in jail after pleading guilty back in October to a felony charge of theft and an aggravated misdemeanor charge of tampering with records.

She must also pay about $20,000 in restitution to the city. A state audit earlier this year found Carter and former mayor Michelle Hermanson had taken city money, with Carter issuing 20 paychecks to herself totaling nearly $8,000.

Hermanson pleaded guilty to theft and other charges last month, and she’ll be sentenced in January.
