Iowan involved in high-profile hot-air balloon crash

January 8, 2013 By O. Kay Henderson

A former Des Moines school board member who ran for governor was involved in the crash-landing of a balloon in California that’s drawn national attention.

Jonathan Narcisse got married on Monday in a balloon with about a dozen family members aboard. The balloon was floating over the ocean for the nuptials, but landing in the San Diego area proved difficult.

“Next thing you know, we’re crashing into a fence and killing a tree,” Narcisse told a California television station.

One person was taken to a hospital for treatment of minor injuries. A video of the crash taken by a member of the wedding party was played on several TV networks this morning. A reporter on ABC’s “Good Morning America” noted the bride and groom went to their reception after the crash landing.

Narcisse ran for governor in 2010 as a Democrat, then he switched to run as the “Iowa Party” candidate. Narcisse is the editor of “The Iowa Bystander” — the oldest African-American newspaper in Iowa.
