Democrat wins special election for Iowa House seat

January 23, 2013 By O. Kay Henderson

Voters in Tuesday’s special election in northern Iowa have chosen the 100th member of the Iowa House.

The House District 52 seat will remain under Democratic control. Charles City Democrat Todd Prichard defeated Ionia Republican Dennis Litterer in Tuesday’s special election. Prichard won 55 percent of the vote.

About 5500 votes were cast in the election. District 52 covers Chickasaw, Floyd and portions of Cerro Gordo County.

Democrat Brian Quirk won the district in November, but resigned in December to become general manager of the New Hampton Municipal Light and Power Plant.

Once Prichard takes the oath of office in Des Moines there will be 47 Democrats serving in the Iowa House. Republicans hold 53 seats.
