Girls basketball tournament ends with first 5A matchup

Top-ranked Central Lyon qualified for the first time this year and made the most of the opportunity by winning the Class 1A state girls basketball championship with a tense 63-61 victory over No. 2 Newell-Fonda.

Western Christian made it two in a row in Class 2A. Brooke Wolterstorff recorded a double-double with 23 points and 14 rebounds and top-ranked Western Christian beat number 2 Lawton-Bronson 75-58 to repeat as state champion.

In 3A top ranked Davenport Assumption won its third straight state title with a 62-40 win over Estherville Lincoln Central.

Cedar Rapids Xavier won the Class 4A title over Harlan 53-52. In the first ever 5A championship, Southeast Polk held off a West Des Moines Dowling rally to win 43-34.
