Drake holds spring drills with thoughts of FCS playoff berth

The Drake football team is going through spring drills with its eyes on a new prize. The Bulldogs have won at least a share of two straight Pioneer Football League titles and beginning next season the league champ will receive an automatic berth into the FCS national playoffs.

Drake coach Chris Creighton says it’s impossible to want to win a championship more this year than last year, but he says the reality is the prize is bigger for winning the league this year with the first PFL berth in the playoffs. “That’s a really big deal, that’s not our ultimate goal, but it’s a really big piece of it,” Creighton says.

The Bulldogs have a lot of experienced players returning but must replace PFL defensive player of the year Tyler Moorhead at linebacker and all league quarterback Mike Piatkowski. Creighton says there are a number of candidates for the starting quarterback job.

He says all the guys who were on the team last year will compete this spring to move up into the top spot. The Bulldogs complete spring drills with an intrasquad game on April 20th.

“For the first time ever we might do a true spring game with two drafted teams,” Creighton says. He says the players are excited about that possibility.
