An northeast Iowa man will serve nearly three years in federal prison after admitting to harassing public officials in Allamakee County. Twenty-seven-year-old Kenneth Haag was sentenced to 33 months in prison in connection with his guilty plea to one count of threatening to injure another person via an interstate telephone call.

The guilty plea came after Haag was accused of making hundreds of threatening phone calls, emails and other communications to judges, court employees, law officers and others in Allamakee County. The judge in the case said the threats made by Haag were “particularly frightening” and more than a simple nuisance.

Haag was apparently upset over what he thought were wrongful convictions in a 2004 case where he ended up pleading guilty to criminal trespass and assault on a peace officer. The provisions of the sentencing also require Haag to be on three years of supervised released once his prison term is up.

He is prohibited from using alcohol or going into bars during the supervision period. He will also be required to complete mental health and substance abuse counseling programs upon his release.
