Two men rescued after river accident in Cedar Rapids

June 13, 2013 By O. Kay Henderson

Two men riding jet skis had to be rescued from the Cedar River in Cedar Rapids last night. The incident happened shortly after seven o’clock Wednesday night, near the Ellis Boat Harbor which is on the northwest side of Cedar Rapids.

A 26-year-old man on his own jet ski heard one of the victims cry out for help. He found two men — between the ages of 50 and 60 — floating in the water next to two jet skis.

One of the men was unconscious. The 26-year-old and another boater were able to get the unconscious victim to a peninsula in the river. That victim is in serious condition at a Cedar Rapids hospital.

The other victim was pulled out of the river by Cedar Rapids firefighters who deployed rescue boats after getting a 911 call. Witnesses told KCRG television they heard a crash just before the water rescue.

A news release from the Cedar Rapids fire department indicates police are investigating the cause of the accident.
